Why summer writing prompts?

Summer break is a great time for kids to relax and have fun, but it’s also important to keep their minds active. Often there are programs at the local library or through the school that encourage kids to keep reading, but writing often falls to the wayside in the summer months.

Writing prompts are a fun and creative way to encourage children to use their imaginations and practice their writing skills. Here are some writing prompts that are perfect for elementary-aged children and will keep them entertained and engaged all summer long!

Write a creative story about a magical summer adventure.

Let your imagination run wild with this writing prompt! Encourage your child to create a story about a magical summer adventure. Maybe they discover a hidden portal to a magical world, or they stumble upon a mysterious object that grants them special powers. The possibilities are endless! This prompt is a great way to get your child excited about writing and to help them develop their storytelling skills.

I love using roll-a-story activities to get the creative juice flowing. “I can’t think of something to write” very quickly transforms into “I’ll need another page!” when students get a great idea. They’ll be full of ideas as they write the tale of a wise octopus who finds a magical shell at the beach!

Writing prompts for fun: a summer journal!

Elementary students love writing about their favorite topic: themselves! Prompt students to keep a journal or diary of their activities during the summer.

This can take many different forms, with everything from notes and pictures directly on a calendar to a full-blown summer scrapbook. For elementary students who have written a journal in the past, it may be fun to mix things up by using some of these writing prompt ideas:

  • Write your journal/diary in comic book form: You’re the main character! What happens in each day’s saga?
  • Use your diary as a habit tracker: Do you have a goal to read more over the summer? Want to get stronger? Using a diary as a habit tracker can help your goals at the center this summer!

Poetry writing prompts for fun

I get all kinds of reactions when I sing the praises of poetry. Isn’t that… hard? Isn’t poetry … a little stale for early elementary kids? My resounding answer is a huge, “NO!” Students of all ages can enjoy both reading and writing poetry. I “sell” poetry to my first grade students as “playing with words.” Poetry doesn’t need to follow rules and can look just about any way one could imagine! Here are some of my favorite summer poetry writing prompts for fun:

  • Concrete poems: Create a poem that LOOKS like its subject. An ode to a beach ball in the form of a beach ball?! Amazing! A piece that describes the feeling of first splashing into water written inside a pool?! Incredible. A list of adjectives that describe that perfect summer popsicle – in the shape of a popsicle? Sounds like poetry to me!
  • 5 senses poems: Exactly what it sounds like! Prompt students to engage all 5 senses to describe a summer scenario. To give extra support, provide students with sentence starters that they can complete: I see…, I hear…, I feel…, I smell…, I taste.
  • Free Form Poems: No rules! Create poetry that makes your heart sing. Incorporate as little or as much art as feels right.
